Summer Fever

"Winds may come and winds may blow, but there's no wind can cure me of my fever, summer fever." - Lyrics from the Donna Summer's      Song "Summer Fever"

People have different moods and some may vary depending on the season of the year. As what I have learned from my psychiatric nursing education, there's this disorder called SAD, an acronym for Seasonal Affective Disorder, where an individual experiences depressive moments during season changes, it may be during winter or summer, spring or autumn. But with the cases in tropical countries like the Philippines, it varies during the rainy or summer seasons.

If you have this type of personality and you need a place where you can marvel at something for you to easily adapt to seasonal transitions, then my top 2 on the list would be the perfect place for you this summer.

BAGUIO CITY - SUMMER CAPITAL, CITY OF PINES

Baguio City is a great place for non-beach lovers during this hot summer days. The high altitude location and its mild climate are the main reasons why it’s well-known as the Summer Capital of the Philippines. A 6- hour drive from Manila, travelers could reach the city either by public buses which ply the Manila-Baguio route or by private vehicles.  Baguio City has been considered as one of the top tourist spots here in the Philippines for it offers a variety of bravura places, which attract sightseers to visit over and over again.

We took a bus while we headed to Baguio last year, a tourist bus specifically since we scheduled our trip through a travel agency. For those who are planning to visit Baguio, I advice that you should facilitate with one if you’ll be going with a group of thirty or more. It’s more economical and at the same time stress-free.  They also offer tour packages and they bring along their tour guides during the entire duration of the tour. With our case, luckily our TG’s were very entertaining and they even added spice to our boring bus trip.

Here are some of the must-see and must-experience tourist spots in Baguio.

THE MANSION.

The MANSION. The official summer residence of the president. This was built during the American Colonization here in the Philippines. This has been considered as one of the top attractions in Baguio because of its Spanish-inspired guesthouse architecture and the Buckingham palace-inspired main gate, which is the most photographed part of the place. Across this is the WRIGHT PARK with a pool surrounded with Pine trees.

Wright Park long pool which reflected the pine trees surrounding the place.

The mild climate of Baguio made it a perfect place for a wide variety of species of colorful and attractive flowering plants to grow.

A lot of tourists who are visiting Baguio City usually never missed to drop by the Philippine Military Academy campus. The environment inside the campus  should be set as an example to all universities and colleges here in the Philippines. With its humid atmosphere, colorful grounds and majestic pine trees surrounding the academy, these factors added to the interest of tourist to visit and discover the wonders of PMA.

I stroke a pose with one of the PMA cadets. :) Well-disciplined indeed!

I had the chance to taste the Bulalo or beef bone soup, the Baguio style. It was appetizing! :)

If you are looking for affordable souvenirs and gift items, hit your shoes to Mines View Park. Shirts, delicacies, bags, and other items ideal for pasalubong or gifts for your loved ones can be bought and grabbed there at a much lesser price.
Souvenir and gift shops are located everywhere at Mines View Park.

My favorite part of our trip was during the time when we headed to the Strawberry Farm at La Trinidad, Benguet, a 30-minute ride from Baguio City. Since I am a strawberry lover by heart, I really grabbed the chance to walk and clearly view how the natives plant and harvest the fruit. It may look a bit sunny in the picture, but the temperature was very cool.

Strawberries everywhere! I loved this!

I can't explain the feeling while looking at these bright red strawberries. It was like getting back to my childhood years where I used to imagine eating a lot of these. One small basket of berries costs at about seventy-five pesos (PhP 75.00). They also sell jams which could be bought by 3 bottles for a hundred.

Baguio City has a lot to offer for its tourists. If given another chance for a perfect getaway, I would surely visit the City of Pines again. Similar to our Vigan tour, we only had a short period of time to explore the wonders of the place. It was a hanging moment for all of us, since one day and a half is not enough to explore all the must-see spots of the city. Vacation in Baguio for a week would be the most suitable span of time to enjoy and to have the best summer ever that you'll never forget for the rest of your life. xoxo

Summer Paradise

'Cause I remember every sunset
I remember every word you said
Tell me how to get back to
Back to summer paradise with you.

 - Lyrics from Summer Paradise by Simple Plan

Summer Heat is on! Few more days to go and it will be officially summer season here in the Philippines, which is why starting today, I'll feature some of the places that I have visited in the past that will surely be perfect choices for a memorable and exciting summer vacation with your family and friends. Top one on my list is :

VIGAN CITY: THE HERITAGE CITY OF THE NORTH

If you're a historic type of person and have great passion for antiquity, then Vigan City may be the ideal place for your summer escape. The city has been known as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in view of the fact that the streets and infrastructures that were built during the Spanish era many centuries ago remains to be still integral up to the present time. Vigan is considered as the best-preserved example of Spanish colonial town in Asia. The city is located at the heart of Ilocos Sur on the west coast of Northern Luzon. If you happen to travel from Manila ,there are buses that ply Manila-Vigan and vice versa. The trip would take about 7-8 hours since it is about 400 kilometers away from Manila. Travelers could also reach Vigan through aircrafts. You just have to take flights from Manila to Laoag and then travel for about 1-2 hours to Vigan either by bus or by private vehicles.
The famous Calle Crisologo. This street is well-preserved and motor vehicles are not allowed to pass by, only Calesas.

If you want to experience the Spanish era lifestyle, tour the streets of Vigan by riding on one of the Calesas.

Vigan offers many places to stay for tourists. Ancestral houses have been turned into quaint hotels and inn and I must say that the rates are affordable and budget-friendly.

Ilocanos are also famous for their LONGGANISA. Honestly, I don't eat longganisa ever since I was young, but when I tried this LONGSILOG (a combination for Longganisa and Itlog or egg)  for our breakfast, the taste was really different. Tourists shouldn't try to miss this kind of food trip experience.

THE FAMOUS VIGAN DELICACIES.
(Cassava cake - Upper Left, Tayupon- Upper Right, Kalamay - Lower Left & Chichacorn)

Aside from museums and ancestral houses, travelers should also try pottery making. We were lucky to have the chance to converse with the pot-makers and they gave us tips on how they mold those high-quality pots perfectly. It's just a matter of rhythm and hand talent as what one of the potters commented.

Even though we only have a limited stay there in Vigan, it was a fun-filled experience to get back to the Spanish colonial times. Walking along the old streets of the city made us feel like we're time machined back to the Spanish colonization era here in the Philippines. Vigan is indeed worthy to be called the Heritage City of the North. With its rich culture, friendly and accommodating people, tourists will surely treasure their memories in this place.

Since this was my first time in Vigan it was really a dream come true for me. Before, I used to daydream as I flip through the pages of  magazines and history books that someday I would visit this magnificent place. Thanks to my lovely mother for this summer vacation gift. Vacation has never been this fun until I visited VIGAN! xoxo

That it should end

This is not the way that it should end
It's the way it should begin
It's the way it should begin again
-Lyrics from "Begin Again" by Colbie Caillat

For my welcoming post, I picked the song "Begin Again" by Colbie Caillat. Two words that would convey thousands of meaning. As for me, this would definitely denotes the reinvention of myself - the other half of me, my writer-wannabe side. I must admit, I am not a gifted writer. I usually envy those personalities who could freely and easily express what's inside them through writing. This is the mere reason why I really want to develop this skill. I believe that each of us can express ourselves unreservedly in a variety of ways and in my case, this blog would serve as a springboard in pursuing my dream of becoming a good writer.

“And, when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.”  -Paulo Coehlo, The Alchemist

I live by this saying from my favorite inspirational book,The Alchemist. My advice to my blog readers, don't hold back to your dreams. You must do everything in order to get hold of what your heart desires. Never let fear overpower your drive to achieving your goals, for it will lead to failure. Lastly, always believe in the supreme God. For with HIM, NOTHING is IMPOSSIBLE. xoxo

WELCOME TO MY BLOG! Hope you'll enjoy reading as I share insights with regards to food, travel, music, fashion and everything life has to offer. Ciao! Till next time. :)
